This talk on the Early Buddhist nuns was given at the Dharma Gathering 2009, in support of the recent full ordination ceremony of 4 nuns by Ven. Brahm at the monastery in Perth., W.A. This dharma talk, is a celebrating the insight, courage and strength of character of the early Buddhist nuns that lived at the time of the Buddha. These untold stories of enlightened women, have been pieced together from various texts and sources of info, for eg., I have drawn from Sally Tisdale’s book, ‘Women of the Way, Prof, M. Levering’s articles and Susan Murcot’s book, ‘The First Buddhist Women: Translations and Commentaries on the Therigatha. The early Buddhist nuns and awakened women hold up the lamp and have inspired especially women down through the generations to live by the liberating teachings of the dharma.

The practice of Lovingkindness, Metta, ( Pali Buddhist word for lovingkindness), is one of the 4 Radiant abodes. The 4 Radiant Abodes are namely lovingkindness, compassion, joy and equanimity. Metta is the quality of the Heart-Mind that is open and responsive, kind, immeasurable and unbounded.
